The Item ▼

Formed by the Forbes Silver Company of Meriden, Connecticut, during the late nineteenth century, this pair of quadruple-plated candlesticks exemplifies the decorative metal craftsmanship of the American Victorian era. Operating under the umbrella of the renowned Meriden Britannia Company before joining the International Silver Company consolidation in 1898, Forbes was celebrated for producing durable, electroplated hollowware. Quadruple plate designates a heavy multi-stage electrodeposition of pure silver over a white metal alloy substrate, engineered to provide lasting domestic durability while capturing the radiant luster of sterling silver. The architectural form is anchored by an undulating square base edged with high-relief repoussé holly leaves and berries. A coordinating band of sculpted holly foliage encircles the bulbous lower knop, which rises into a slender fluted column terminating in a classic candle cup. The naturalistic holiday botanical motif is chased with crisp definition and fine veining across each leaf, highlighting the era's taste for organic ornament. Both pieces retain an authentic aged patina with light surface wear, minor faint scratches, and subtle tarnish settled into the relief crevices consistent with careful historic preservation. Ideal for mantel illumination, seasonal holiday tablescapes, or Victorian silverplate collections, each candlestick bears the full stamped circular eagle hallmark with pattern designation 94 on the underside. Each candlestick measures approximately 7.75 inches in height with a 4.5-inch square base, and the pair has a combined weight of 1.8 pounds.
