Designed by celebrated American ceramicist and modernist innovator LaGardo Tackett (1911–1984) for Schmid Porcelain, this set of four cylindrical mugs exemplifies the geometric restraint and functional elegance of the mid-century modern movement. Tackett, renowned for his influential contributions to Architectural Pottery and post-war industrial design, conceived this iconic tableware with a distinctive aesthetic that bridges minimalist Japanese production precision with California modernism. Each piece features a rich avocado olive green glazed exterior contrasted by an energetic persimmon orange stripe ringing the unadorned rim, opening to a clean white porcelain interior. Subtle architectural arches notch the base of each vessel, elevating the cylindrical form while maintaining an uncluttered, sculptural silhouette.
Manufactured in Japan for Schmid International around 1960, these vessels bear the stamped manufacturer insignia along with Tackett's signature Tack monogram on the underside. Three of the mugs in this four-piece set remain in very good vintage condition, free of cracks or exterior glaze loss. One mug exhibits multiple chips along the bottom foot rim as documented in the photographs; these chips are situated on the underside perimeter and remain largely concealed from view when the vessel rests upright on a table. The set retains remarkable visual presence, serving as an exceptional functional display of mid-century studio tableware.
Each mug measures approximately 4.0 inches in height, 3.75 inches in width from the rim to the outer edge of the handle, and 2.75 inches in diameter across the rim, with the four pieces together having a combined physical weight of approximately 1.8 pounds.
